After two cards have been dealt out to each player in the hand, the player to the left of the dealer needs to start the first round of betting. In Guts poker the betting is different then it is in typical internet poker games such as Holdem or Omaha. Rather then being able to bet any amount, you’re only allowed to bet a predetermined amount.
Guts Poker, or just Guts, is a popular home poker-based game. It is known for being easy to play and extremely volatile. Given the potential for huge pots, it takes a strong stomach to be a good Guts player. Given the simplicity, it is also a good game to call when everybody is too tired or drunk to concentrate on a legitimate poker game.Rules
There are numerous variants of Guts Poker. I, personally, have seen it played several different ways. The one thing almost every variant has in common is the player is forced to a simple decision with every hand — ’in’ or ’out.’
For now, this page shall address only a variation that I shall call Three-Card Monte Carlo Guts. This is characterized by each player getting three cards and every losing player matching the pot (as opposed to just the player with the worst hand). Following are the specifics.
Three-Card Monte Carlo Guts
*A single 52-card deck is used.
*Each player shall Ante a specified amount into the pot.
*Each player is dealt three cards.
*The order of poker hands is as follows from highest to lowest:
*Straight flush
*Three of a kind
*Straight
*Flush
*Pair
*Three singletons
*After seeing his cards, each player must simultaneously declare if he is in or out. This is generally done by everybody opening his fist at the same time. A chip in the fist indicates ’in’ and an empty fist indicates ’out.’ A variation is to simultaneously drop cards for ’out’ and holding them for ’in.’ However, this second method is vulnerable to cheating via a move known as the ’late drop.’
*The pot shall go to the player with the highest hand among all those who went in. All other losing players who went in must match the pot.
*In the event one player only is in, he wins the uncontested post automatically.
*In the event nobody is in, a new hand is dealt.
*The game ends when somebody wins an uncontested pot.
Variations
Here is a partial list of rule variations.
*Two cards (or any number) are used instead of three.
*Players must Ante again to the pot if nobody is in.
*If three or more players are in, only the losing hand must match the pot (this is known as Survivor Guts).
*Players declare in order. A button rotates around the table to indicate which player must declare first.
*If only one player is in, then he must beat a dummy hand.
*Hand rankings can be altered. For example, no straights or flushes.Strategy
Following is my strategy for Three-Card Monte Carlo Guts. What I claim is that this strategy will be equal or superior to any other mix of player strategies. It may not be the absolute optimal hand but I believe it to be very close and should do well against recreational opponents.

3-5-7 is a version of Guts Poker. If you’re not familiar with how to play Guts or the betting structure of this game we advise you to lean that first. This is one of the few games that can cost a player plenty of money since it’s a match pot game. In this version, the smallest hand will pay the highest hand and to win the entire pot, a player has be the only player to call “Guts” or played the hand five times consecutively. In 3-5-7 Guts, there are a total of three hands played per round. There are no betting rounds in Guts poker games which is why the ante should be a fixed amount above the normal betting amount.
Things to Remember
In 3-5-7 Guts Poker you’ll be playing three hands per round. At the end of each round, the players who “Gutted” will show each other their hands to determined who has the highest and lowest three card hand. Do not show the players who didn’t drop your hands.

The player with the lowest three card poker hand will pay the player with the highest three card poker hand an amount equivalent to the pot. The chips in the pot are to remain in the middle and will not go to the winner.Five Card Guts Hand
Once you’ve completed the three card hand, each player will ante again and the dealer will deal each player an additional two cards. The same step will continue in round 2, whereby each player will determine whether they want in or out. Once everyone’s hands are in the middle, the dealer will instruct the players to drop. The players who “Gutted” will reveal their cards only to the other players still in the hand. The player with the lowest five card poker hand will pay the player with the highest five card poker hand with an amount matching to the total of the pot. Again, the actual pot is to remain in the middle.The Seven-Card Hand
Each player antes again and the dealer will deal an additional two cards to each player. Players will once again decide if they want in or out by placing a chip in their hand. Once everyone has had time to do this, the dealer will instruct everyone to open their hands and drop. Only the players with chips in their hands will play. The lowest five card poker hand in this round will pay the highest five card hand an amount equivalent to the pot value.
